A panorama of cartonera publishers in Brazil
publishing field; cartonera books; cartonera publishers; independent publishers.
This work presents an overview of independent cartonera publishers in Brazil, contributing to filling gaps in Publishing Studies regarding this movement. Beginning in 2003 with the creation of Eloísa Cartonera in Buenos Aires, and reaching Brazil in 2005, the cartonera movement is characterized by the artisanal production of books with hand-painted cardboard covers, combining sustainability, accessibility, and resistance to the hegemonic logics of the publishing market. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework on the publishing field and the concept of the independent publisher, this research argues that cartonera publishers occupy a position on the margins of the publishing field, beyond conventional independent publishers. The study organizes a critical bibliography on cartonera publishing, maps active Brazilian publishers by region, and provides an overview of eight cartonera publishers from different regions of the country: Northeast—Mariposa Cartonera (Recife, Pernambuco) and Licuri Livros Artesanais (Salvador, Bahia); Central-West—Curupira Cartonera (Tangará da Serra, Mato Grosso) and Yiyi Jambo (Ponta Porã, Mato Grosso do Sul / Assunção, Paraguay); Southeast—Catapoesia (Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais) and Ganesha Cartonera (Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro); and South — Magnolia Cartonera (Curitiba, Paraná) and Vento Norte Cartonero (Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul).
