Musical genres and politics: brazilian MPB, Rap, and Pop (2024–2025) in a comparative perspective
musical genres; politics; identity; MPB; Rap; Pop; contemporary brazilian music.
this study discusses how three brazilian musical genres – MPB, Rap, and Pop – function as cultural devices that articulate identities and political discourses during the period of 2024–2025. The research is based on the idea that Music is not only sound but also a situated social practice, capable of reflecting tensions, belonging, and disputes. The methodology combines theoretical and historical analysis of musical genres and identity with the systematic collection of tracks released in Spotify and Deezer playlists. The corpus comprises 227 songs (40 from MPB, 173 from Rap, and 14 from Pop), allowing the observation of discursive trends and distinct modes of political engagement. The study seeks to understand how each genre mobilizes social and political themes, without proposing hierarchies of authenticity, but rather highlighting internal logics and stylistic choices that reveal ways of existing in contemporary society.
