SUMMARY:

This dissertation investigates the transformations that have taken place in the Brazilian retail book trade in the 21st century through the biographical and professional narratives of women booksellers with more than twenty years of experience in different segments of the market. In dialogue with publishing studies, the research seeks to understand how these agents perceive the transformations of the bookselling profession in a context marked by market digitalization, the expansion of e-commerce, the reconfiguration of physical retail spaces, and changes in the forms of mediation between books and readers. At the same time, the study aims to contribute to the expansion of discussions regarding the presence of women in the literary, publishing, and bookselling fields, considering that women’s participation has frequently been marginalized in historical narratives about the sector. The investigation combines a bibliographical review grounded in the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu (passim), women’s history studies, publishing studies, and oral history with field research and in-depth interviews conducted with the selected women booksellers: Cláudia Amorim, Maria Antônia Pavan, Cláudia Masini, and Carmen Menezes. Among the objectives of the dissertation are the historical discussion of the figure of the bookseller, the analysis of women’s presence in reference works related to the publishing field, the development of an adaptation of Robert Darnton’s communications circuit focusing on booksellers and readers in the 21st century, as well as the construction of analytical categories concerning the bookselling profession based on empirical material. The interviews are also mobilized as a form of memorial record of professional trajectories that remain scarcely documented.
