THE MAN AND HIS THINGS: An Ecocritical Perspective on As laranjas iguais, by Oswaldo França Júnior

This dissertation investigates ecological sensitivity and the relationships between humans and non-humans in the work of Oswaldo França Júnior, specifically through his book of short stories As laranjas iguais (1985). To this end, the study delves into the author's critical reception (fortuna crítica), demonstrating that his ecological perspective is also present in his novels. The short form (miniconto) is understood as an aesthetic strategy for constructing a singular perspective on humanity’s involvement with the world. This interdisciplinary bibliographic research is grounded in ecocriticism and engages with authors who reflect on humanity's relationship with the world and other living beings, such as Maria Esther Maciel, James Lovelock, Ailton Krenak, Milton Santos, Bruno Latour, Vandana Shiva, and Maria Mies. The analysis of the stories is organized into three thematic axes: the environment, other living beings, and the feminine condition. Based on these themes, the study observes how human intervention, frequently masculine and guided by a logic of domination, can result in vulnerability and tragedy.
