SUMMARY:

The Brazilian socio-educational system may be defined as the set of policies, institutions, and practices aimed at holding adolescents accountable for committing offenses, based on the principles established by the Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente (ECA) and the Sistema Nacional de Atendimento Socioeducativo (SINASE). The socio-educational measure of institutionalization, regarded as the most restrictive measure within the socio-educational system, must be understood both as a sanction for the offense committed and as a pedagogical opportunity aimed at reconstructing life trajectories and promoting adolescents’ processes of subjectivation. This process should enable them to recognize themselves as rights-bearing subjects, reconfigure their identities, reinterpret previous experiences, and develop new life projects. However, studies have shown that the life trajectories of young people assisted by the socio-educational system are permeated by social vulnerabilities, which often reflect Brazil’s historical social structures. In this context, individuals are expected to take responsibility for their actions and devise future projects disconnected from criminality, while remaining aware that, upon release, they will likely return to the same social conditions that preceded their institutionalization. Thus, we ask: how do young people deprived of liberty represent processes of (dis)identification with criminality and construct the (re)signification of social values? Situated within the field of Semiolinguistic Discourse Analysis, this study aimed to examine how these young people, in and through enunciative activity, signal markers of subjectivity that reveal processes of identity construction among individuals in conflict with the law, while mobilizing interdiscourses and socio-discursive imaginaries of accountability and socialization. The theoretical framework presents the socio-educational measure of institutionalization based on current legislation and regulatory instruments; describes the use of life narratives as a research method, drawing on Arfuch (2010, 2013), Delory-Momberger (2009, 2012, 2016, 2018), Bertaux (2006, 2010), and Machado (2016); and discusses the premises of Discourse Analysis grounded in Charaudeau’s Semiolinguistic Theory (2014). Methodologically, prior to data collection, the study was required to comply with the ethical guidelines established by the Secretaria de Justiça e Segurança Pública de Minas Gerais. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview with a young person serving a custodial socio-educational measure. The accounts were recorded and transcribed and subsequently divided into three categories established a priori: experiences prior to institutionalization, the realities of deprivation of liberty, and future projects developed during the process of socialization. The analyses showed that the young person signifies a trajectory marked by fragile family ties, institutional care, and the premature assumption of responsibilities, reconstructing the period of deprivation of liberty as a time of reflection and organization of his life. Therefore, socialization emerges as an ongoing process negotiated among past experiences, meanings attributed to the present, and future projects, highlighting the relevance of future studies that follow young people both during and after the completion of socio-educational measures.
