RESUMO:

Until the beginning of the 21st century, three types of translation related to second language teaching and learning processes were identified, namely "explanatory translation", "pedagogical translation" and "internalized translation" (ALBIR 2001). On the other hand, the same period was considered as the beginning of an era of remarkable progress in the history of digital technology (SILVA, 2012). Therefore, considering the accessibility, mobility and ubiquity of the ICT devices in our current society, the today student profile and the relationship between translation and the above mentioned processes, it was hypothesized that a new translation practice emerged alongside those already known, involving devices of the those technologies. In fact, this research aimed to figure out the role of the free electronic translator in second language learning. The participants were 719 students of the Professional and Technological Education (EPT), class of 2017, CEFET-MG and the data were collected by means of an online questionnaire (Google Forms). Based on the literature about the topic, variables were created for the categorization of the data, such as the machine translation programs (more) used by students, their relationship with the tool; the reasons and purposes of use, the evaluation of the quality of electronic translators by the subjects themselves and the issue of the ethicality and  use of those devices by students. The results of the research confirm the existence of the practice and suggest that it goes beyond the mere insertion of an source text and the collection of a target text for direct consumption. It also comes out that the resources that digital technology offers are underused by second language teaching actors.
