RESUMO:

Within the current national educational scenario, the teaching of English in Brazil, in a certain way, seeks to establish an integration with digital technology. This leads the school to think students outside the classroom, rethinking its role in society. As far as the school makes this move, it facilitates the learning process, increases students´ expectation and success, makes the curriculum relevant and stimulates agency and autonomy development. According to Kalantzis and Cope (2010), the use of web 2.0 technologies, with collaborative design and easy sharing, has the potential to connect student´s school life to his/her personal life meaningfully. In this way, learning goes beyond the classroom and takes place in any place at any time. Learner becomes agent of his/her own knowledge, connecting learning to his/her own experiences and interests. In order to investigate students’ motivation from their beliefs and actions, concerning the use of digital technology to learn English in default of school, this study proposes a research of an applied nature, qualitative approach and exploratory orientation, using a multiple case study design. The study will be conducted at a private regular school in Sete Lagoas, called SESI – Industry Social Service, with students from elementary and high school, who use the internet outside the school context as an English learning strategy, and accept to voluntarily participate. By using a recorded semi-structured interview, it is expected to (1) elicit students´ beliefs about digital technology to learn and practice English; (2) identify students’ actions involving digital technology use to practice or learn English; (3) elicit motivational elements emerging from the data and verify its influence on students´ probable learning; and (4) infer research implications for the pedagogical practice focused on the development of students’ digital literacy and on responsible citizenship.
