SUMMARY:

Rapid technological advancement has enabled widespread access to the internet, which has brought many social benefits, but also many concerns. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the contemporary social phenomenon characterized by the dissemination of excessive information, without criteria, by rumors and fake news that make access to reliable sources difficult is called infodemic. This name refers to the fact that it is possible to identify several elements of the phenomenology of epidemics common in the modern phenomenon of information dissemination, mainly on public health topics. To analyze and understand the dynamics of the infodemic process, we propose two studies. One utilizes the classic SIR model and two variations based on this model. The other study, also based on the classic SIR model, incorporates two equations describing antagonistic populations (depicting a polarized environment). The interaction between these populations is described by an integral equation, applied in a scenario of political polarization. Regarding the first study, we initially focused on examining time series data of search frequencies for the controversial topic "childhood vaccination"using the Google Trends tool. By applying the SIR model, our goal was to assess the model’s ability to capture the dynamics of the infodemic process with relative accuracy. In the second study, the objective was to replicate, through the model itself, the curve that describes the dynamics of political polarization using the variables of legitimacy, resonance and visibility
