RESUMO:

This research aims to investigate workers’ perceptions in a food analysis laboratory, in the nutrition department of a Federal Institution of Higher Education, about their work context, in order to identify alternative practices for decision making processes for people management at this environment. This objective is based on the discussions about present risks in research and teaching laboratory environments. Due to the very characteristic of its activities, laboratories are immersed in physical, chemical and biological risks, among others. At these spaces, activities of scientific research, clinical or diagnostic analysis can be carried out and, as a result, a gatherning of people, equipment, reagents, solutions, agents, biological samples and residues may happen, which makes these sites convenient for a several types of accidents. This scenario points to the need for rigor in terms of safety and quality management in these environments. Due to the nature of this research, which the investigation object is a working context, the use of Activity Ergonomics as a theoretical-methodological approach might be considered pertinent. This theoretical basis presents as central analytical dimensions “work context”, “individual” and “work”, understanding that the improvement of well-being at work and the guarantee of productive efficiency and effectiveness are only possible if these fundamental dimensions, which make it possible to look at the individual at his work context, are taken into account. The present work is a descriptive research, classified as a case study, which makes use of a documentary research as a data collection technique, besides, it also utilizes systematic observation, semi-structured interview and a Work Context Assessment Scale (EACT) application (Mendes e Ferreira, 2007). The data analysis will be made based on the Bardin’s Content Analysis, as well using Minayo’s Method of Sense Interpretation, and, appropriate procedures of the EACT analysis. It is expected, at the end of this study, to provide subsidies that can contribute to the practices of People Management.
