SUMMARY:

This research aimed at analyzing the phenomenon of the behavioral insights adoption and incorporation in practices, processes, management techniques and structures in pioneer Brazilian organizations in this field. The research encompasses two theoretical fields. On the one hand, the phenomena of diffusion and adoption of management innovation and their respective decision-making processes; and on the other hand, theoretical and applied perspectives concerning decision-making, behavioral sciences and behavioral insights, seeking an articulation between such research topics. The methodology is based on a qualitative approach, of the phenomenological type, with exploratory-descriptive objectives, based on the strategy of multi-case studies and with thematic analysis of the content obtained through interviews and document analysis referring to 14 organizations. The models of decision-making processes recommended by the literature of generation, adoption and diffusion of innovation subsidized the understanding and comparison of the processes of incorporation of behavioral insights in those organizations in such a way that, when compared provided an understanding of the main determinants of decisions to adopt practices based on behavioral sciences. The results show the characteristics and networking of pioneering organizations, the application of insights to the behaviors that are sought to be influenced and the techniques used, as well as ethical aspects and issues related to experimentation. The research contributes by bringing critical elements to the understanding of the possibilities of using behavioral insights as an innovation within organizations, by evidencing those as a management innovation, by signaling eventual gaps, application opportunities and expansion of the practice; and, more specifically, by supporting managers and organizations in their intention to innovate considering social and cognitive-behavioral aspects of their stakeholders. The investigation also contributes to Management theory and practice as they are experienced today, suggesting a more concise and legitimate bridge between behavioral sciences and management innovation. The work has an original contribution, as no research has been done on the topic using qualitative data through a phenomenological approach, which opens a vast and new path for future research.
