SUMMARY:

This dissertation presents a study on the emergence and legitimation of the people rental market in Japan, inspired by the perspective of Market System Dynamics (DSM) (GIESLER; FISCHER, 2017). In other words, this study understands that context, culture and social norms are inseparable in the process of creating and legitimizing markets (HUMPHREYS, 2010). Consequently, we present and highlight the sociocultural elements inherent to Japanese society that shelter the emergence of this market, starting from a sociological discussion of social roles to point out the value of positions and social roles in that society. Based on lococentric relationships, that is, having the position they occupy in society as a reference, even the Japanese language sustains this structure, translating a society rooted in a rigid system of social hierarchy that even influences its decision-making system known as the ringi and nemawashi system. To verify how much this cultural formation is responsible for the emergence of the rental market in the country, we analyzed two corpora - a book and publications on Japanese question and answer sites - using methods inspired by Bardin's Content Analysis (1977). As a result, we understand that the emergence of the market that shelters the commodification of people is permeated by an intense dynamism, where encounters and disagreements of different actors are observed, crossed by political interests and cultural influences, as well as laws and norms that regulate and defend their monetary and social exchanges. We conclude that the actors involved harmonize their interests through culture, adapting their behavior based on their cultural norms and values, guiding their decision-making processes based on a collective interest and renting social roles that allow them to transgress the norms without becoming socially inadequate. We also present two proposals for theoretical advancement and suggestions for strengthening and further research on markets in Organizational Studies.
