SUMMARY:

The uberization or platformization of work has been the subject of research in the field of Organizational Studies in recent years. However, there seems to be a lack of works that analyze the phenomenon from the management processes implemented by companies, investigating which materialities operationalize the algorithmic management model and the interactions of these processes with workers. From this, the intention of this research is to highlight connections between algorithmic management and intervention in the behavior of drivers and how such interventions are operationalized in the decisions of Uber drivers. To achieve this objective, we initially carried out a description of the literature on the subject, focusing on productions that help us understand the evolution of work management, the dissemination of algorithms in contemporary times, and the concepts of control and modulation of behavior. Then we detail our methodological proposal, describing the patent analysis as the main strategy and the documentary survey to be carried out through the survey of the patent records of the company Uber in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) between 2010 and 2020. As results, 499 records were found in October 2020, from which we searched for patents that described the dynamics of extracting and analyzing data generated by drivers with a view to their use in modulating behavior. From the results found, eight patents was chosen to demonstrate the analysis proposal. Being an ergologically inspired research, we articulated two central concepts that were used to interpret patent descriptions in an attempt to better understand algorithmic management and its interactions with workers. Seeking to give evidence to the discussions and questions presented on the subject.
