SUMMARY:

In the last decades public policy directed to technical and higher education promoted an extensive expansion of the federal education network which implied an increase in structure, budget and hiring of work force. For federal technical education system this process resulted in a set of new perspectives and needs that teachers would have to comply, such as verticalization of education, training for the local job market and applied research. These teachers would face a set of new demands that are not aligned with the reality of their training institutions of origin. Which could be a reason for divergence between technical education institution and its teachers, situation that can foster teacher turnover intention. Under this context, the decision to leave an education institution can be explained by individual characteristics associated with individual preferences for the job and by characteristics of social environment in which the teacher works, including the people and administration itself. This network of social relations can influence individual decision, and it will be identified as social embeddedness, meaning that non-economical social facts that connect people can influence economic and technical decisions. Present dissertation aims to explore the determinants of turnover choice by teachers at the Federal Institute of Minas Gerais (IFMG) with focus on co-authorship network as a proxi for teachers’ professional network environment. This aims to incorporate aspects of social embeddedness that could influence the decision to leave the institution. To this end we shall construct co-authorship network of the academic work published between 2008 and 2020 and analyze it by selected social network indicators in search of differences between groups that evaded the institution and those that stayed. Additionally, we will conduct an econometric analysis using a binomial logit model with panel data aiming to verify if network centrality indicators can partially explain the choice to leave IFMG.
