SUMMARY:

The high demand for the delivery of domestic and industrial supplies caused a significant increase in the number of heavy-duty vehicles in transit in Brazil, with the road model being the main vehicle for transporting goods and supplies in the national territory. These vehicles, as they mostly use diesel oil as fuel, are responsible for a significant emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere, especially a class called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), known for their high carcinogenic character. In order to detect and quantify the PAHs from vehicular emissions of this class, a standard of reference chemical substances (RCS) of 14 PAHs (from one to six aromatic rings) was used and an analytical method was developed for instrumentation in gas chromatography coupled to a dielectric barrier ionization discharge detector (GC-BID), using the IT-FEx polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer phase coated in tube extraction device. The manufactured devices were submitted to physical-chemical characterizations through Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG) and Absorption Spectroscopy in the Infrared (IR) region. The interaction of PAHs with the polymeric phase of IT-FEx in an aqueous medium of distilled water was analyzed through equilibrium kinetics, with a time of 25 min for equilibrium. It was also observed a better interaction between medium-sized PAHs and PDMS (four aromatic rings) compared to smaller (one to three rings) and larger (five to six rings). The method was followed for analytical validation, according to the observation of figures of selectivity merit (the only parameter performed so far), linearity, detection limit and quantification and accuracy. It was observed that the method is selective for 10 compounds, which are from the fifth to the fourteenth in the elution order, not being selective for the first four. The application of the validated method follows, therefore, to samples of emissions from 30 heavy-duty vehicles, in order to evaluate the gaseous and particulate phases, showing the variation in the composition and concentration of these emissions in the two phases observed.
