SUMMARY:

Water is a natural resource that is very important for the survival of all the species that inhabit the planet. Most human activities depend directly on the use of water, and its consumption has increased more and more, mainly due to the accelerated growth of population and cities. Techniques for the reuse of graywater, domestic wastewater from sinks, baths, laundry and kitchen areas, have been widely recognized due to its low contamination, high volume and easy access, when compared to other effluents. Above all, studies of laundry graywater have relevance, because it is estimated that 10% of all water used in urban areas is consumed in washing clothes. The reuse of wastewater is a way to combat scarcity, maintain waterways, and reduce water pollution. Ultrafiltration (UF) is very competent in the process of removing colloids, particulate materials, microorganisms, and high molecular weight dissolved, and is efficient in graywater application. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the environmental feasibility, as well as the performance potential of ultrafiltration, with regard to the quality of the water generated, with a view to reuse, by means of effluent matrices from domestic and industrial laundries. The hollow fiber membranes were duly tested for their intrinsic characteristics, by the FTIR confirming their polymeric constitution of PVDF. The permeability at the beginning and end of the UF operation analyzed in the membrane modules did not change, proving that the modules are operating with the same starting efficiency. The long duration operation test, obtained as a result that the membranes have resistance and invariability for 40 hours of operation. The physicochemical characterization of the feed and permeate samples of the graywater from domestic and industrial laundries, applied to the UF technique, revealed that the parameters that most stood out in the removal of compounds were turbidity, COD and total solids. Comparing the two effluent matrices, the removal values were lower for the industrial laundry effluent when compared to the domestic laundry effluent. However, the two matrices have proven to be well compatible in the results and efficient for non-potable reuse according to the NBR 13.969/1997 norm, except for class 1. In addition, they conformed to many potability parameters. The UF system, with PVDF hollow fiber membrane modules showed good efficiency in the application of graywater from laundries. As a condition for improvement, combining technologies with UF is one possible solution to generate better quality reuse water.
