SUMMARY:

With the strong growth of the circular economy strategy, many industries are focused on sustainable development, with management focused on the reduction, reuse and recycling of solid waste. Within this, the present work has as main objective the study and characterization of a refractory residue of carbon magnesia (MgO-C) from steelmaking furnaces in order to detect and quantify compounds that may cause problems in its use as a secondary raw material. in the production of refractories. This study is of great importance since the use of this residue as a secondary raw material cannot compromise the properties and performance of the product. First, the selection and preparation of the samples to be analyzed will take place. Then, the samples of carbon magnesia residue will be characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques, which is capable of producing high resolution images of the surface and will be useful for analyzing the morphology and verifying the composition via EDS, and X-Ray Diffraction which is a technique applied to determine the crystalline structure and mineralogical phases present in the ceramic material. It is expected to verify and identify crystalline phases in samples of waste and new refractory and compare them. Through this comparison, it is expected to identify contaminants, and thus evaluate the potential use of recycled magnesia carbon in a commercial refractory mass. Based on the characterization results, it is expected to study methods for waste recovery and separation of unwanted contaminants. The results of this research work will be able to contribute significantly to the reduction of refractory solid waste, reduction of the cost of industrial production of refractory materials, and, thus, with the reduction in the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). This project has its objectives well aligned with SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG 12 Sustainable Production and Consumption.
