BIG AREA: Engenharias
AREA: Engenharia Ambiental
SUMMARY:

Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) are generally generated at very high rates in construction, renovation, or demolition processes. These processes can have impacts on the environment and society as a whole, thus requiring systematic evaluation. Therefore, studies addressing the identification and measurement of environmental impacts related to CDW are relevant, as the construction industry consumes about 50% of all natural resources consumed by society. In this context, this work aims to assess the environmental impacts related to the life cycle of CDW recycled by the municipality of Belo Horizonte and applied in urban areas. To achieve the proposed objective, qualitative and quantitative approaches will be employed. The Delphi method will be used to investigate complex and uncertain concepts related to CDW recovery processes, with the obtained data supporting strategies. Additionally, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool, according to ISO 14044, will be used to identify the main environmental aspects and evaluate the corresponding impacts on the natural environment arising from various waste treatment technologies. The LCA study will be conducted using the SimaPro software, with comparative sensitivity analysis with openLCA software responses. Environmental indicators will be evaluated in the categories of acidification, human toxicity, global warming, eutrophication, abiotic depletion for fossil fuels, and potential ozone depletion. Expected results include mapping CDW sources in Belo Horizonte/MG, identifying involved environmental aspects, quantifying the environmental impacts of these wastes, and proposing improvements to support strategies and best practices in CDW recycling.
