SUMMARY:

The disastrous circumstances surrounding the tailings dam scenario in recent years, environmental restrictions and regulations, as well as population pressure has progressively intensified for the licensing of new tailings containment structures. In addition to this fact, the deposits are increasingly with lower grades, causing, as a consequence, a greater amount of material to be discarded. The disposal of tailings in the form of dense pulp or paste has gained considerable relevance because it has numerous advantages over conventional disposal in dams. Some studies have been carried out on the chemical and mechanical characteristics of the tailings, so that this material can present satisfactory properties for dewatering, transport and storage. The use of flocculating reagents can change the properties of the tailings and influence the efficiency of the formation of high density pulps and/or pastes. Therefore, the objective of this work will be to evaluate the interference of different flocculating reagents, supplied by BASF, on the rheological properties of a fine-grained iron ore tailings. For this, sedimentation tests will be carried out to provide the necessary data to obtain the material's sedimentation velocity under different conditions. Rheological tests will also be carried out, so when it comes to fine particles this type of study is of great importance. Therefore, the pulps will be submitted to slump and rheological tests to obtain the slump and yield strength. The addition of flocculants to the pulp is expected to provide an increase in sedimentation velocity and a reduction in the turbidity of the recirculating water.
