MONITORING AN IRON ORE MINING TAILINGS DAM:
CORRELATIONS BETWEEN GEOPHYSICAL AND GEOTECHNICAL DATA
Geotechnics, geophysics, monitoring, dams.
Human activity is closely linked to the use of natural resources and in this context dams
are built to take advantage of these resources (as in the case of dams that form reservoirs for
water storage) or to dispose of tailings from mineral extraction activities. The monitoring of
these structures has been used with the use of numerous technologies and different objectives.
The use of geophysical methods for monitoring purposes is still not widespread, being widely
used for mapping or spot surveys. This work aims to propose a methodology to correlate
geophysical information from an iron ore tailings dam with geotechnical periodic monitoring
data through neural networks. Successive surveys will be electrical resistivity.
