SUMMARY:

Mosaic’s phosphate mining works as an open mine at Barreiro Mine region, located in the city of Araxá, in Minas Gerais State. Since this ore is contained in the lower portions of the mine, submerged in groundwater, draining the pit is of paramount importance. Although, as groundwater is being extracted, Barreiro’s water table configuration has been changed, generating a depression as cone centered in the region of the mine pit. Geotechnical instruments used to monitor the aquifer water level proved the trend impact even at Barreiro Hydromineral Resort. Then some control measures were carried out, such as the implementation of a so-called "Green Ring" by revegetating the area were dams A, E and F were implemented; and the use of drains that enabled mine drained groundwater to re-infiltrate creating a hydraulic barrier, as well as the existing dams that retain sediments from rainwater incidents in the pit area, deposits, and roads. The “Green Ring” configures a water table protection strip formed strategically downstream from the mining area, upstream Barreiro Hydromineral Resort. Then, the present work involves entire process of idealization and implementation of alternative recharge system for Barreiro’s aquifer, more efficient than using dams, presenting less social impact, whose main objective is the validation of an alternative recharge system for the Barreiro aquifer that allows the decommissioning of the F.
