SUMMARY:

In the last decades, due to globalization and a natural incentive to consumption pattern, society has been facing a following growing demand for consumption goods, which means an increasing need for mineral goods. The processing through which the mineral undergoes to become industrially useful produces a significant amount of tailings. The concern about the disposal of tailings from mining has grown in recent years. The collapse of two large tailings dams in Minas Gerais, which resulted in irreparable losses, contributed to sectors of civil society turning their attention to the issue. Tailings containment dams are often built and raised with the tailings from the ore processing themselves. The feasibility of these large geotechnical structures poses challenges for engineers, especially due to the physical properties of these materials and the deposition methodology, which can often constitute a structure with a greater propensity to rupture. A report referring to the rupture of an iron ore tailings dam raised upstream in the region of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, in Minas Gerais, points to liquefaction as the most likely cause of the failure of this structure, which resulted in the death of more than 300 people and disastrous environmental impacts. The phenomenon of liquefaction can occur both for natural reasons and for human action. In this way, the present paper proposes the analysis of the susceptibility of fine tailings to liquefaction. Through a careful review of the available literature, it is intended to elucidate the phenomenon of static liquefaction and its triggers. In possession of the different publicly available reports and studies on the dam, it is intended to reanalyze the rupture of the structure and compare the methodologies implemented in the different documents. Finally, it is intended to collaborate with the indication of the probable trigger(s) that caused the occurrence of liquefaction in the massif, leading it to rupture.
