SUMMARY:

Mining is an important economic activity for many countries, but it can cause environmental impacts, especially in the generation and management of tailings. In this context, the canadian performance program “Towards Sustainable Mining” (TSM), the “Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management” (GISTM) and the ISO 14001 standard have been adopted by mining companies as tools to improve environmental management in their operations. However, it is still common for these standards to be implemented separately, without effective integration, which can lead to gaps in environmental management. This work aims to propose an approach for the integration of the TSM Tailings Protocol, GISTM and ISO 140001 in mining projects, aiming at improving environmental management and reducing negative impacts.
