SUMMARY:

Optimization processes in mining activities in open pit mines are of great relevance due to the need to reduce the high costs associated with processes in the exploitation of mineral assets from their deposits. The unit steps in the mining phase in an open pit mine are divided into five important activities, namely, rock drilling, rock dismantling, transportation, loading and mine infrastructure conditions. Due to the complexity of geological formations, in some scenarios, the deposits are found with a high degree of hardness of the rock mass, avoiding exploitation by mechanical equipment and, with the need for rational, strategic and efficient planning, so that it can be carried out through drilling and rock blasting activities, using explosives. Of utmost importance, so that there is a process with lower associated costs and adequate recovery in the fragmentation of the rock mass for the subsequent stages of processing, in primary crushing, is the knowledge and application of geological-geotechnical tools, as a validation procedure for data inputs prior to the unit mining stages. This work has its application in the Abóboras Mine, located in the municipality of Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, whose product is iron ore and seeks to advocate the optimization of operations through geological-geotechnical mapping, specific to the drilling and rock dismantling. It is expected to prepare the geological-geotechnical map and geomechanical classification of the rock mass of the operational mining front. Prepare the “Rock Blasting Zones” thematic map in order to highlight critical points of the process. Furthermore, correlate the computational modeling of rock dismantling with the application and execution 'on site' at the operational mining front, with the purpose of identifying the variables with the greatest impacts, in order to validate the methodology for optimization, to the detriment of inputs of geological-geotechnical data. With this study, it is expected to obtain an agile optimization methodology in the prior validation of drilling and rock blasting operations, with sustainability applied to operational processes and excellence in the management of environmental aspects and impacts, recommended by good mining engineering practices. .
