SUMMARY:

Grain drying is a thermal process for removing moisture from agricultural products to preserve quality. However, this process has a high energy consumption, which varies from 10 to 25% of the national energy use each year (LI, 2020). Therefore, studies referring to drying are relevant in order to use energy resources more efficiently. The present work carried out the validation of a mathematical model for drying maize grains in a fixed bed. The mathematical model used was based on the consulted literature and was solved using the Finite Volume Method with ANSYS Fluent software, and with the UDF tool, which allowed for the customization of the drying model. The dryer studied for validation was made by Dias (2019) has a bed 130mm in diameter and 200mm in height and 6 experiments were carried out using temperatures 40, 50 and 60°C and speeds of 0.8 and 1.3 m/ s for drying air. The experimental data from the literature were compared with the numerical results. The validation of the mathematical model considered 3 statistical parameters: the coefficient of determination (R^2), the sum of the residual squares (SQR) and the root mean square error (RMSE) and the variables used were: moisture content, energy efficiency and exergetic efficiency. Regarding moisture content, the values measured for the 6 experiments showed excellent agreement with the simulated values, with the value of R^2 varying between 0.997 and 0.999 and the values of SQR and RMSE being close to zero. For energy efficiency, the values of R^2 are between 0.825 and 0.949; the values of SQR are between 9.158 and 46.270 and the values of RMSE were less than 2. For exergetic efficiency the values of R^2 are between 0.706 and 0.922 and the values of SQR and RMSE were close to zero. The Student t test showed that the model can be used as there are no significant differences between simulated and experimental values of energy and exergy efficiencies.
