RESUMO:

This research comes from the necessity of helping students to manage their own motivation to learn English as a foreign language (DÖRNYEI, USHIODA, 2011) and from the knowledge that teachers cannot manage students’ motivation in the classroom (BAMBIRRA, 2009). Therefore, it was created an instrument, called motivational planner, composed by proposals that guide the reflection and decision making of participants, outside the classroom, along the management of their own motivation. These activities were developed in order to let students know the self-motivation strategies proposed by Dörnyei (2005), interact with them and apply them. Counting on the spontaneous participation of five students from the subject called ‘Oficina de Leitura e Produção de Textos em Língua Estrangeira II’, of the Graduation Course in Letters of Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Minas Gerais, and the teacher of the subject, it will be carried out a longitudinal study, along one semester, in which the motivational management trajectory developed by the students will be observed by the researcher through a monthly semi-structured interview. The purpose of this study is to observe how the mediation of the planner works, and discuss if it makes feasible the management of students’ own motivation and promotes their English learning. The methodology of this research has an applied nature, a qualitative approach, an exploratory orientation and a multi-case study design. The data generated by the students’ planner entries, the interviews and the researcher notes will be interpreted and discussed in light of the most recent theories about self-motivational strategies use and management of own motivation (especially the ones proposed by DÖRNYEI, 2005; DÖRNYEI. USHIODA, 2011; DÖRNYEI, 2017), in order to answer the research questions.
