SUMMARY:

Throughout my teaching practice as a teacher and coordinator of the Language Course at Universidade Estadual de Minas Gerais UEMG / Divinópolis, I have realized that it is necessary to investigate the relationship between students of languages and mother tongue teaching. My professional experience has allowed me to observe that there seems to be, in the discourse of newly undergraduate language students, a conception that studying and teaching language is the same as studying and teaching Normative Grammar. I believe that such reports reveal representations associated to the concept of language and its teaching that need to be investigated and analyzed more systematically. Considering this overview, this research aimed to investigate the discourse of undergraduate students from Languages Course in relation to the conception of language and mother tongue teaching, in order to contribute to significant reflections and even interventions correlated to the teaching and learning of native language. The research that will outline this study can be classified as qualitative and will make use of the discursive analysis of statements given by students coursing their first semester, as well as by those who are coursing the last semester of Languages at UEMG-Divinópolis and Ibirité. For data gathering, an open-ended questionnaire was applied to language students who were beginning the courseand to those who were ending it. The questions were related tothe following themes:a) the reasons for choosing their course, such as: importance of being graduated in Languages and studentsexpectations associated to the knowledge to be acquired throughout the course, as well as expectations concerning their professional future; b) the necessary knowledge for a Language student who is a future teacher of his/her native language;c) questions concerning the importance of why and what to teach as a native language teacher; and d) questions concerning the ways in which the relationship with the Language Course developed. To proceed with the research, the data analysis was focused on the elements of Ideation and Evaluativeness proposed by Martin and Rose (2003, 2007). It is expected that the data analysis, from the perspective of the adopted linguistic theory - in this case, Functional Systemic Linguistics (LSF) reveals the representations about the concept of language and language teaching, and make it possible to discuss the ways representations are related to the pre-existing conceptions of language, as well as those present in official documents.
