THE VISUAL SYNTAX IN THE POETRY OF AUGUSTO DE CAMPOS: A STRUCTURAL READING
Keywords: Augusto de Campos, visuality, structure.
ABSTRACT
The objective of this study is to investigate the poetry of Augusto de Campos, which is composed of verbal, sound, and visual elements. This research, however, has mainly focused on the graphic-visual aspects of his poetic oeuvre. Surely, these elements are not separable and are integrated in the poem’s unity. However, this choice of analysis has aimed to prove that, in his poetry, although the verbal element is prevalent, it is organized through a graphic-visual structure. The purpose was to show how the visual elements are organized throughout his oeuvre and by which procedures they are placed in circulation within the poem. The processes in realization create a proximity among poems which in turn assemble groupings. The oeuvre itself, perceived as poet and structure, is constituted in this manner, but it was possible to form other groupings. As conceptual framework, the theories of concrete poetry and essays by Augusto de Campos himself were used, through which it was possible to show influence in his poetry. However, other broader references in Décio Pignatari, Fayga Ostrower, Flora Süssekind, Gonzalo Aguilar, Júlio Castañon Guimarães, and Rogério Barbosa da Silva have contributed to the analysis of the oeuvre and therefore reach another perspective for interpretation. Therefore, through a graphic analysis, this study has sought to describe how visual procedures organize the verbal layer of the poem.
