RESUMO:

This dissertation aims to analyze translations of two novels and two poetic anthologies done by Paulo Henriques Britto. Our goal is to find characteristics of Britto’s decisions, allowing us to identify the presence of the translator in the text. To achieve our goal, the first chapter is dedicated to distinguish author and translator. Based on Foucault, we discuss the function of the author and, in Benjamin, the translator’s function. Once both functions happen through the text, we debate text creation, based on Barthes. We assume the text as an intertextual environment, where author and translator have their actions made inside this diverse context. Paulo Henriques Britto is our practical example of the translator’s presence in the text, and because of that we dedicate a moment to analyze his writing as an author and his opinions as an academic in Translation Studies. It is our aim to find characteristics in Britto’s translations that will resemble his original writing, for doing so, we relate his translator’s practice to the theory he defends, by reading not only his translations, but also his academic and authorial papers. Translation is part of a publication process which includes not only those who directly work in book edition, but sustain a close relation with all of those who participate in the literature’s productions. Using Lefevere’s concept of rewriting and noticing literature as a polisystem as Zohar establishes, we dedicate a chapter to the editorial and textually parallel analyses of novels and anthologies that will be compared. We propose a research whose goal is discussing how originals and translations relate, comparing theory to practice by considering not only the text, but also the editions and the connection between author and translator. This paper aims to identify how does the translator’s presence coexists with the author’s in foreign translated works, suggesting a double authorship, even though theories claim for the invisibility of the translator in the text.
