The deconstruction of the idea of a 'bad hair' and the acceptance of a natural curly hair: an imagetic analyisis of a self through testimony of people who have dealt with a hair transition
Discourse analyisis; narratives of Life; hair transition; curly hair.
Our goal is to understand some perspectives of a movement that is growing in Brazil and abroad, specially among black women: assume the curly and natural characteristics of their hair. In order to do that, we bring up the need to think about sociodiscursive imaginaries built over the relation of a woman over her hair. We want to understand the reasons why - for a long time - woman have denied the acceptance of their original hair characteristics, preferring to use chemichal products rather than let it be natural. In this paper, we intend to evince the elements that have made them think in tão ways: first, denying the curly hair then accepting it with its african characteristics. For this, we have analyzed e-mails written by woman that have passed through a hair transition. The material consists of life stories sent to a blog called Cacheia! mantained by a beauty parlour called Mab Mais Cachos in 2017. The concurso wanted to choose the most outstanding stories to win prizes such as haircut, a hair treatment, and others. Through the women depositions we will investigate the concepts brought by them and for their identitary (de)construction. The analysis will be done through some interdisciplinary concepts and ways: i) How is the brazilian beauty Pattern built and in which way is It related to racism and feminism. ii) we will analyze our corpus using concepts such as narratives of life, and studies of text and discourse analysis.
