SUMMARY:

This project aims to investigate gender roles in the work of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) and his female characters' relationships with death. The study aspires to corelate gender issues in the 19th century, with the analysis of the short story "Berenice", originally published in 1835. The character in this story dies unexpectedly and returns to life at the end of the narrative, configuring herself as an emblematic example of a recurring sign in Poe's work, "the beautiful and dead woman" and the idea of death and afterlife, eternalizing this moment in a poetic narrative and a recurring theme in his work. As a methodological path, this research intends to investigate the theory of literature and its intercessions with studies in the field of psychoanalysis andaims to encompass discussions of gender and literary analysis. The short story "Berenice" will be discussed, as well as the two adaptations that were made from this literary production. In a parallel and complementary way to the project and its questions, we will resort to the image as a research guide and work observing the interdisciplinarity that these currents establish with history and psychoanalysis, using as study objects, the French film "Berenice"directed by Éric Rohmer and the episode "Berê", from the Brazilian miniseries “Contos do Edgar” (2013) directed by Pedro Morelli, having in mind the intention of investigating the relations between literature, art and technology.
