SUMMARY:

The Republic of Benin is a country in West Africa that was colonized by France. After about three quarters of a century of French domination, the country became independent in 1960. However, as during colonial times, French is the only official language and the only language of instruction in formal public education in Benin until the nowadays, despite the efforts that have been made since shortly after accession to independence in order to preserve and promote the more than 60 local languages, mainly the initiative to introduce some of them in the national formal education, which is the language policy by which I am interested in this ongoing research. In fact, the study that I intend to develop aims to identify the causes of the failure of attempts to introduce the national languages of Benin in the formal education of the country from the 1970s until today and point out ways to solve the problems. To this end, in addition to collecting documentary data regarding the issue, I intend to conduct semi-structured interviews with people involved in the actions of that initiative. The data will be treated using Laurence Bardin's Content Analysis techniques and the results will be discussed in the light of a matrix consisting of parameters defined based on logic and others identified in the literature on the subject as success or failure factors. I hope that the results reveal the causes of the failure of attempts to introduce Beninese LNs into national formal education and that the theoretical framework on which I intend to base myself will allow me to see ways forward to contribute to the resolution of the problems.
