Palestras - Professores Wim Van Den Bergh e Johan Blom - Bélgica

Prof. Johan Blom: Bitumen research at the microscale

Several domains, mainly connected to the study of binders, more specifically bitumen, cement, bio binders, and geopolymers are explored in the micro lab.

Looking for answers to the behaviour of bitumen in the material’s microscale structure and composition is a key research topic.

Microstructural changes in bitumen could have an impact on the material’s mechanical properties. The investigation is performed using new measuring devices like a Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) and multispectral image cameras.

On the one hand, the influence on bitumen of oxidation, UV, and water is like a grey zone, which still needs to be fully explored. On the other hand, additives, rejuvenators, and recycling (bitumen, rubber) will affect the bitumen. From this perspective, we are also looking at the environmental effects, more specifically toxic fumes “VOC”.

It can be concluded that microstructures need to be observed to come up with better macrostructure solutions.

Prof. Wim Van den bergh:

- Introduction Research @ Sustainable Pavement Research for students/researchers

- Sustainable pavements in the port of Antwerp-Bruges: material selection, design and sensor technology: In the port of Antwerp several new technologies, processes and materials were used. In this presentation an overview is given of this project with some specific applications elaborated: lean asphalt, geogrid, modified mixtures with PmB and fibres, tack coat. The structural behavior will be monitored in time by Fibre Bragg Grating sensor technology.

- FOAM: Towards a foamed-bitumen base using RAP for roads for Flanders: design, test tracks and environmental impact: The research team finished the project FOAM. In this project a new mixture for Flanders is demonstrated: a base layer mixture containing RAP and bound by foamed bitumen. The production and materials are on site, so transport is limited. The presentation will give the concept, the mix design and some cases, supported by LCA-LCCA studies.

- ROAD_IT and CYPATS: innovative promising technologies: Several new devices and methods to improve quality of asphalt layers are introduced to industry. In this presentation a selection are presented: infrared line scanner, pqi, smart compaction system, Heat exchanging asphalt layers.
