RESUMO:

Several languages have been used to represent the Holocaust or Shoah, from historiographical narratives to literature, from Sociology to Philosophy and from comics and photographs to cinematographic production. The transmission of horror and absolute oppression experienced in the death camps has for years been a subject seen as of great importance in the academic milieu. This work aims to contribute to the studies on the construction of memory and the notion of the testimony of survivors who, in spite of the continuous torment of remembrance, tell their stories. The research is mainly based on the discussion of two important works – If This is a man? and The Drowned and the Saved, by Primo Levi. In addition, Levi’s works deal with four photographs taken by prisoners at Auschwitz, whose concepts of image and traumatic memory are approached in the light of the discussions of such theoreticians as Walter Benjamin, Paul Ricoeur, Giorgio Agamben, Didi-Huberman, Márcio Seligmann-Silva and Michael Foucault, among others. The objective is to analyze how the two texts, in contrast to the concepts emanating from the photos taken at Auschwitz, reflect and contribute at the present to the construction of the collective and cultural memory of the Jewish communities imprisoned in the death camps of World War II. Firstly, concepts which deals with the subject of memory are discussed, a domain that at the same time is composed of individual memories and determines the cultural memory: cultural manifestations chosen as symbols of the collective memory of groups, whether these are nations or minorities. It then discusses how the testimonial narrative has the ability to deal with memories by allowing diverse points of view and giving voice to those who would have no other channel of expression. These works incorporate the imaginary, historiographical and autobiographical discourse, offering insights that help us to rethink, in the context of comparative literature, the relation between memory, trauma and testimony, as well as issues involving pain, revolt and indignation.
