As a product of a master's thesis defended at the Graduate Program in Language Studies at the
Federal Center of Technological Education of Minas Gerais - CEFET-MG in 2016, an
educational game entitled Pac-English, aimed at favoring the development of some English
words pronunciation, was developed and tested. Six children from a municipal public school in
Contagem/MG, who had never formally studied the language, aged between seven and ten years
old, were the participants. Through an experiment, a profile of each student was carried out
based on their answers to a semi-structured questionnaire, answered in the pre-test phase. Also
in this phase, the reading of a list containing twelve words from the game was recorded in an
audio file. Next, the test was applied – accompanied by the researcher, the children experienced
an individual three-hour game session recorded with the Camtasia software. In a post-test, the
reading of the same initial list of twelve words was also recorded in an audio file, for purposes
of comparison and analysis. As a result, we observed that the game can contribute a lot to the
learning process, given its penetration in the social context. It was possible to verify that two
participants learned pronunciation and also vocabulary, despite their short interaction time with
the game. However, there were also some problems, about which the Examining Board of the
dissertation made criticisms and proposed suggestions for change. Based on these pertinent
contributions, we felt motivated to redesign the game. That is the purpose of this PhD – to create
and develop the New Pac-English, taking into account all the Board’s suggestions, with the
same pedagogical objective as the first game and aimed at the same target audience.
