SUMMARY:

The present doctoral thesis analyzed the contributions of a pedagogical proposal with the photojournalism genre from the perspective of the Pedagogy of Genres of the School of Sidney, associated with the Grammar of Visual Design (GDV) for the development of the specific competence nº 10 of the Portuguese Language for the elementary education of the National Common Curricular Base - BNCC (BRASIL, 2018). This study reflects the need to reflect on the teaching processes in times of changes in the processes of meaning production, arising from the increasing use of technologies in social practices and in the documents that guide the construction of school curricula. For this discussion, some relevant theories were listed, among them the definition of language and gender from the perspective of the Sociosemiotic Theory of Language (HALLIDAY, 2004) and its developments such as the Pedagogy of Genres (J.R. MARTIN, 2000, 2006), (J.R. MARTIN & ROSE, 2007) and Visual Design Grammar (KRESS & VAN LEEUWN, 2006). Teaching through competences (PERRENOUD, 1999), proposed by the BNCC, was also analyzed, as well as the photojournalism genre, which was listed by Base as one of the genres in the journalistic-media field for the Portuguese language component of elementary school in the final years. . Based on the theories listed above, the teaching proposal was applied in three classes of the 9th grade of elementary school in the state network and the private network in the city of Divinópolis - MG and had as corpus the productions of the students' photo reports, the logbook of the researcher and the focus group carried out with the students participating in the research. This study concluded that the proposal for teaching reading and genre production based on Genre Pedagogy and Visual Design Grammar contributed to the development of skills in 9th grade students, leading them to mobilize practices of digital culture in order to produce sense in the processes of understanding and textual production, as pointed out by the BNCC.
