SUMMARY:

The purpose of this summary is merely to guide reading for the qualifying exam. The proposed study relies on two fields: Language Studies and Social Technology in Breast Cancer. It holds an investigative nature on both socio-discursive imaginaries alongside the construction of self-images in the life narratives of women with breast cancer from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds – with one being well-off in contrast to another one that is not so well-off – in order to understand subjects of enunciation in light of the disease, in a triadic relationship proposed in studies based on Semiolinguistic Theory: “the Self – the Other – the World”. Therefore, it involves two profiles of women, namely a group made up of three women writers of autobiographical works (using a category of canonical classification of gender), in which tell about their life journeys amidst breast cancer, starting with the diagnosis, and then the treatment and health recovery phase. The other group is comprised of three women telling their stories through interviews. They have undergone breast cancer treatment through the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and are followed up by a Civil Society Organization (CSO), called Women’s Breast Cancer Prevention Association (ASPRECAM). The present study encompasses an interface between fields of Health alongside Social Technology, the Humanities, and Social Science, although the theories with greater relevance in data analysis are under the scope of  Discourse Analysis (DA), namely Amossy (2008a, 2008b), Arfuch (2010, 2013), Charaudeau (1996, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2009) Machado (1996, 2006, 2016, 2020), Maingueneau (2004, 2008ª, 2008b, 2015, 2020), Orlandi (2018) and Arnoux (2006, 2021). Hence, our goal is to verify which socio-discursive imaginaries are used and which ethé are projected onto the narratives of women with breast cancer based on their experience as well as on the following: (i) the possible fears they feel after the diagnosis and during treatment; (ii) the ways in which they signify or resignify their own bodies and sexuality before and during treatment; (iii) the family, work and social relationships intertwined during and after treatment; (iv) management of information about the disease alongside lack of access to such information; (v) social inequalities experienced and their implications before and during the treatment; (iv) potential contributions provided by experimenting the disease. We expect that that the research will contribute to promoting the prevention of the disease. We also aim to disseminate the knowledge built up as a Social Technology (ST) product, which might add value to the social work of the Breast Cancer Prevention Association (ASPRECAM), the institution involved in this research, and could stand as a model for other organizations. It is also aimed that the women involved in this research signify their silence and resignify their contentions and mindset on breast cancer as well as on their experiences through the cathartic process of writing and speaking.
