SUMMARY:

This dissertation proposes a reflection on literary translation based on the translation into French of Machado de Assis's famous short story The Gold Watch by a professional translator: Maryvonne Lapouge. This study was based on the Thirteen Deforming Tendencies described by Antoine Berman in his book The Translation and the Letter, or the Hostel of the Faraway. Its main initial hypotheses are the following: that no translation is completely perfect and that it is always possible to improve it; that reflection on the act of translating makes it possible to perfect its practice; and that the thirteen deforming tendencies described by Berman are a first step towards a more elaborate system of translation analysis. Taking these observations and reflections into account, we then propose a new translation of the short story analyzed, accompanied by comments on the decisions made during the translation, when necessary. Finally, by way of conclusion, but also as a possible introduction for future work, we propose, on the one hand, a reflection on Berman's Thirteen Deforming Tendencies and, on the other, a reflection on the translation analyzed and the retranslation. The proposed work is divided into three parts: the first part presents the theoretical background and the strategy adopted, the second presents the analysis of the French translation of The Gold Watch by Maryvonne Lapouge, based on Antoine Berman's Thirteen Deforming Tendencies, and the third proposes a commented retranslation of the short story.
