Italo Calvino's novel If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller contains a myriad of reader characters. The protagonist himself is a reader, including in his name [Reader], and many other characters read because they have reading as a job. But among this range of readers, the "non-reader" Irnerio stands out. Although Irnerio refuses to read, in the way we conventionally understand reading, he establishes a relationship with books by transforming them into sculptures and in the process ends up reinventing the activity of reading. With this in mind, we believe that, despite claiming to be a "non-reader", Irnerio is a potential reader, who, in the process of turning his power to read into an act, resorts to inoperativeness, making the book and reading open up to new possible uses, uses that respond to his wishes and desires. Thus, based on the considerations of Giorgio Agamben (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021) on the concepts of potency, impotence (or potency of not) and inoperability, this research aims to investigate the nature of Calvino's non-reader character, who in turn alludes to another famous character in literature: Herman Melville's clerk Bartleby. In addition, we will start from the idea that, just as every power of being/doing is a power of not being/doing, every reader is, to some degree, a non-reader, and we propose a classification of types of non-reading (impossibility of reading; failure; and inoperosity), taking the studies Pierre Bayard (2007) and Giorgio Agamben (2018) as theoretical references to analyze the characters in Calvino's novel.
