SUMMARY:

The ongoing research has as its theme the digital literacy of foreign language teachers and the pandemic context in light of the complexity paradigm, whose research object is Digital literacy of foreign language teachers before, during and after the emergency period of teaching resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. This object of study was the starting point for the theoretical-methodological outline, given that it is an interdisciplinary, non-disciplinary research (Moita Lopes, 2006), with approaches to the transdisciplinary perspective. In view of this, the general objective is to analyze, in light of the complexity paradigm, the digital literacy development experiences of foreign language teachers before, during and after the emergency teaching period in the Covid-19 pandemic. In this sense, in this doctoral research, studies from different areas of knowledge are combined, such as Education, Social Sciences, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Natural and Exact Sciences. Therefore, the research is theoretically based on studies on digital literacy, foreign languages teachers training from the perspective of Applied Linguistics, on the assumptions and characteristics of Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) which are based on the paradigm or science of complexity, on the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and regarding Systemic-Functional Linguistics, theory used for analysis and which is related to the complexity paradigm and CAS. Methodologically, the thesis is the result of an investigation with a qualitative and interpretivist approach, carried out with foreign language teachers from public or private education networks in any Brazilian state who worked in basic education and/or university education at least two previous years (2018-2019), two years during the Covid-19 pandemic (2020-2021) and continue to work even after the pandemic period of remote teaching (at least until 2022). The teachers who consented to participate responded to: (a) a questionnaire to find out the participant profile in line with the research theme; and (b) wrote a technobiography – story of life with technologies – based on seven guiding topics. Data analysis is being based on the meanings constructed in teaching discourses based on the answers provided and the interaction and dialogues based on the research instruments. These meanings are being analyzed according to the Transitivity System of the Systemic-Functional Grammar that makes up Systemic-Functional Linguistics. With this thesis, it is expected to contribute by revealing information, development difficulties, facilities, innovative experiences or frustrations regarding the process of developing digital literacy of foreign language teachers in the investigated context. Furthermore, it is expected that the theories and data presented and discussed will contribute to the development of critical sense about the effects of technologies and teaching, in relation to their learning and performance as an educator in the face of the most adverse contexts in which life professional demand.
