With roots in Japanese sequential arts from centuries ago, manga, Japanese comic books, have become popular and conquered readers around the world. Arriving in Brazil in the 1960s, gaining more popularity in the 1980s, manga were initially brought to the country on the initiative of Japanese immigrants and their descendants. Subsequently, publishers specialized in publishing Japanese titles emerged in Brazil, such as JBC, Conrad, NewPOP, Panini, etc., which brought titles already popular in the East, such as Dragon Ball and Knights of the Zodiac. Such publications have their own material characteristics regarding format, paper and paratexts. Observing these characteristics, we developed the present work, which seeks to investigate, within the JBC catalogue, the differences and similarities between the formats published by the publisher, with the aim of proposing an analysis of the ways in which such paratexts influence readability or not, as well as such as which paratexts would be specific to the version adapted to the Brazilian public. We established a cross-section that covers three titles from the publisher's catalog with all the publication formats it works with: Bakuman, published in tankoubon; InuYasha, both in the meio-tanko version and the wideban print, and Knights of the Zodiac in its kanzenban version. The present work carried out an analysis that sought to understand what are the defining material characteristics and what are the constituent paratexts of each of the manga formats published by JBC, with the aim of evaluating how they meet each of the factors that determine its readability, being: reading speed, understanding the narrative and maintaining the reader's interest. We were able to understand that, despite there being a minimum standard of editorial treatment to establish understanding of the work, other factors determining readability vary greatly between the analyzed corpus. Finally, when we reflect on the importance of researching paratexts and readability in manga, we realize how such an undertaking can be relevant in improving some elements that involve the relationship between the reader and the manga. These elements are: 1) readers’ understanding; 2) accessibility; 3) the impact on the reader’s experience. In short, the analysis of paratexts and readability in manga is crucial to understanding how these elements influence the reception and interpretation of works, as well as to guide the production of manga that are accessible and engaging for the public.
