THE UNCONSCIOUS DIMENSION OF MOTIVATION IN AN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING TRAJECTORY
Unconscious motivation; implicit motives and attitudes; learning experiences; learning foreign languages.
In recent decades, interest in investigating motivation in the area of learning English as a foreign language has increased considerably. However, except for Al-Hoorie’s (2016a; 2016b) seminal contribution, there are almost no research initiatives that address the unconscious content involved in the process (Al-Hoorie, 2015; Dörnyei, 2020). With this research, we intend to investigate the unconscious dimension of motivation in the learning trajectory of English as a foreign language of a Brazilian proficient in the language. We considered using a version of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) adapted for the purposes of this research and generated by the IATGEN software. With this method, we hope to capture implicit attitudes of the participant regarding their motivation to learn. In addition to applying the test, we intend to record English learning experiences that have marked the participant throughout his life, which can be done through semi-structured narrative interviews. We hope that the data generated is robust enough for us to understand and explain, even partially, how implicit motives and attitudes influence the participant's motivated behavior in learning English.
