SUMMARY:

From personal experience as a reader and professional experience as an English teacher, the desire to combine literature and teaching an additional language was born. This is how this thesis arises, whose objective is to investigate the influences of a literary reading circle on English language learning in high school classes integrated with technical education. To this end, a discussion is undertaken about the teaching and learning of foreign languages in Brazil, the conceptions of language found in the main regular education documents in the country and the approach to literature in the teaching of modern foreign languages in these documents. We then move on to discussing what reading is, how it occurs in language teaching and what the reading circle, used as a methodology here in this thesis, is. To complete the theoretical contribution for data analysis, the concepts of autonomy and affordances are presented. To generate data, a literary reading circle was implemented in the second-year of Environmental Control, Electronics and IT classes at CEFET-MG, Contagem campus; an initial questionnaire was administered to profile participants in relation to reading and learning English; and, finally, participants produced a learning narrative about their participation in the circle. A preliminary analysis, using data from the initial questionnaire, shows an overview of the participants and how they interact with reading and learning English - it is possible to see that the majority of participants read and enjoy reading, and that this can be used to expand the foreign language repertoire, creating opportunities to use the language and for them to have access to more works and continue their reading journey.
