SUMMARY:

A highly utilized resource by Jair Bolsonaro throughout his presidential term (2019-2022), the nationwide radio and TV broadcasts were adopted by the government as part of a political strategy to demonstrate power and confer legitimacy to the former Army captain, who served as a low-ranking parliamentarian in the Chamber of Deputies for 28 years. Since Brazil's redemocratization in 1985, he was the President who most frequently employed this format to address the nation. Therefore, this research aims to discursively analyze a set of eight of these broadcasts with the goal of investigating how the Bolsonaro administration's official discourse was constructed to attempt to persuade (and manipulate) public opinion. The study is conducted from the perspective of Semiolinguistic Theory and the political discourse studies of Patrick Charaudeau. Through a methodological framework developed from the structure of speech acts, two analytical flows were delineated to characterize the communication situation and identify the sense effects generated within it. It was demonstrated that the communicating subject (EUc) seeks to project two types of enunciators onto the interpreting subject (TUi): a political one (Bolsonaro without the formality of the office, known for speaking his mind without filter, being "authentic"), shaped by a network of interdiscursivity affiliated with the far-right, and another as the president (Bolsonaro in the formal exercise of the office), molded by the elements established in the communication contract. The analysis retrieves the political and social context in which the enunciation acts took place to highlight the main characteristics of ethos, pathos, and sociodiscursive imaginaries that constitute this discourse. The hypothesis raised, based on the results, is that the combination of the two enunciators (political and presidential) projected by the communicating subject turned the nationwide broadcast into a populist instrument of egopolitics, through which the process of signification and sense production in the discourse, instead of conferring greater legitimacy to Bolsonaro, led to his loss of conditions to legitimize himself as president.
