SUMMARY:

This research has as theme the subjective dimension of English teaching in federal Professional Technological Education (hereinafter, TPE) and has a general objective which aims is to understand how the subjective dimension of teaching English in an TPE institution is constituted. In this study, we problematize the Cartesian tendency of educational institutions to seek objectified results, disregarding the fact that in addition to the cognitive and operational aspects, there are processes that depend on subjective human beings. We assume the process of teaching English as complex, subjective and singular, whose subjective meanings are expressed by the teacher of the target language regarding teaching experiences. Subjectivity Theory and Complexity Theory are the basis of our inspiration because we understand English teaching at TPE as a complex system surrounded by human relationships which, in turn, are made up of individual subjectivities and social subjectivities. One of the implications of the research is the perception that subjective dimension of teaching can be constituted by subjective meanings and subjective configurations whose genesis is systemic, non-linear, open, recursive and dynamic. For the research development, we are guided by Qualitative Epistemology and Constructive-Interpretative Methodology which, in turn, work in an integrated and complementary way with the Theory of Subjectivity, forming a triad that is the theoretical framework created by González Rey, under the cultural historical perspective. The investigation nature is qualitative, it is case study and, therefore, seeks to study in depth a human phenomenon in its subjective dimension within its context. This arises from the uniqueness and interpretation of information systems expressed through research strategies such as conversational situations, participant observation, field diary, among others. In summary, epistemological principles which guide the field research integrate communicational, dialogic and singular characteristics that are represented by differentiated information of an specific case. As for the “results”, there is hope that this research will contribute to: (a) understandings about the subjective dimension of English teaching and its subjective configurations in the context of a federal public Technological Professional Education institution; (b) some intelligibility regarding the relationships between individual subjectivities and social subjectivities in language teaching; (c) a careful look at central subjective productions and their consequences on the teaching and teacher processes; (d) reflections on teacher as a subjective individual constituted historically and culturally; (e) new theoretical-practical studies on the topic of subjectivity on the language teaching process. We expect, above all, that the research may be useful to the English teaching-learning processes in TPE institutions, public schools and Brazilian educational culture.
